Thomas Alfred "Todger" Jones V.C. D.C.M.
We have been in contact with a Mr Tony Miller in regard to a excellent project that has been started by him in Runcorn, Cheshire, this is to honour three Victoria Cross recipients, below is an extract from the first response that we received from our initial contact with Tony.
Let me introduce myself - my name is Tony Miller and I reside in Runcorn Cheshire. I have recently initiated an appeal for the erection of a statues to our local Victoria Cross winners ,
Thomas Alfred "Todger" Jones V.C. D.C.M.
Acting Lieutenant Thomas Wilkinson VC
Sgt Thomas Mottershead VC
When I was young (many many years ago!) I had heard of Todger but not understanding much about the Great War and what the V.C. actually meant, that piece of information stayed in the very back of my mind for many years. As I got older and took an interest in British history I came to the conclusion that Britain must be the only country in the World that doesn't Honour its true heros, whether through War or through medical and scientific work. We only appear to pay tributes to "celebrities" ie, John Lennon Airport, Knighthoods given to multi millionaire T.V. workers such as Michael Parkinson, Trevor MacDonald – along with countless sports people.
Several years ago I campaigned to get Harry Patch and Henry Allingham Knighthood. I petitioned the Queen twice, Gordon Brown P.M. twice, my local M.P. dozens of times, the Cabinet Office countless times but unfortunately my pleas fell on stoney groundAfter they had passed away, not only was I saddened by their death I was very angry that living history (WW1) had now been consigned to history.
About last July (2010) my wife suggested I do something for Todger, because I was fascinated by his bravery and the part he played in WW1. Hence the idea of a Statue was born. Before I embarked on the project, I researched what was involved. I identified sculptor and manufacturer as well as support from local Council and others. In addition, The Runcorn Weekly News are extremely supportive and are backing my campaign with as much publicity as I need. I have written to many large companies looking for support, along with charities such as the National Lottery Fund, but all to no avail. It’s extremely frustrating and I am now branching further afield to see if there’s any further support I can reach.

As can be seen from the response we had, this is someone that is passionate, committed and trying to make a difference in his community, making sure that the brave men who were awarded our Nation’s Highest Award for Valour, are remembered, and educate future generations to these remarkable men.
Uunfortunately the project is very slow in moving forward as he is working on his own, it is certainly not through a lack of passion, but due to the current climate and a lack of help and support.
For this reason The Nottingham & Nottinghamshire Victoria Cross committee is supporting Tony in this project, and will give help and support as much as we can while we are currently running three of our own projects
The project has already got some supporters on side, they include:- (and lots more to follow)
Derek Twigg M.P
Graham Evans M.P
Cllr Rob Polhill, Halton Council leader
Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News
Halton Royal British Legion
Britain at War magazine
